My Story
Derek Clark
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
My Purpose:
To help people heal, become the best versions of themselves, and live their best lives.
Therapy Journey/Background:
I witnessed people I loved suffering from the impact of trauma, mental health issues, and addiction. I was a highly sensitive child, but to survive a difficult childhood a part of me learned to shut down my emotions when they became too overwhelming. As an adult, I became curious about reconnecting to the parts of myself that I had pushed aside to feel whole again. This curiosity, as well as compassion for those suffering (which included myself) inspired me to shift careers and pursue a life of healing. This healing work has also helped me understand how my own neurodivergence protected me through distraction, and dissociation. Much of my healing journey has involved reconnecting to the present moment, and being there for every part of myself with compassion.
I am a lifelong learner with a growth mindset, which means I view challenges as opportunities to grow, and learn from my mistakes. This mentality helps work with my clients to understand their internal systems, and to refine treatment to better meet their needs while constantly increasing my own expertise through training, independent study, and Self work. As a therapist, I believe working on myself is just as important as my knowledge and experience as a therapist. This enables me to provide services I believe in because I have experienced the benefits firsthand. I constantly seek novel therapeutic methods with an open mind while consistently deepening my understanding of the human condition through independent study, working with others from different cultures, and self exploration.
Synergistic Identities:
We all have many identities that make up who we are. While I have many, (e.g., white cisgender male, able-bodied, neurodivergent, child of divorce, middle class, college educated, to name a few..), I value them all. They help tell my story, and they all shape the lens that I view the world through. Some of my identities are particularly useful in my work as a therapist. For example, my past career was in systems thinking/design, which helps me as a therapist to understand the big picture, and how different factors in a person's life (both internal, and external) impact them. As a yoga instructor, I have learned through experience, and education how breathing impacts the nervous system, which in turn impacts thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations, as well as how mindful awareness of the body impacts our mind, and vice versa. From martial arts (i.e., training/competing in jiu-jitsu for the past decade), I have learned to benefits of facing fear/anxiety with the courage to grow, and the power of community & mentorship. As a person with an education grounded in science, I constantly focus my learning on approaches that have been rigorously tested, and proven effective. I have also been involved in sports since childhood which taught me teamwork, discipline, and work ethic.

Specialization:
Diagnoses are a collection of symptoms that help insurance companies determine reimbursement, and provide a quick snapshot to clinicians helping them identify potential treatment options that have been effective for people with similar issues. I view each client as an individual with unique needs who deserves more than a "one size fits all" approach. That being said, I have significant experience helping people with the following diagnoses:
